In the winter, heating bills can become overwhelming due to extreme temperatures. Sometimes you may feel helpless because there is nothing you can do! You have to have heat right? So it appears you have no other option than to suffer and pay an outrageous bill. This is not entirely true; while it is factual you have to pay the bill one way or another, there are several things that you can do to reduce your costly bill. The following is an important guide to help you get through the winter.

One of the most important things that you can do is to keep your thermostat at only 68 degrees. This temperature is enough to keep your house warm, but low enough that your furnace does not work too hard in the winter. The harder your furnace has to work, the higher your heat bill is going to be. So grab an extra blanket instead, and reduce your heating bill drastically.

If you must have your heat set to higher levels, a solution would be to turn down your thermostat by ten degrees at night. With added blankets and pajamas, you will likely not notice the change in temperature; however, you will definitely notice the lowered electric bill. Also, if you leave for work and nobody will be in the home, this same rule applies. Ten degrees could make a fifteen percent difference in your bill.

So the thought of adjusting the thermostat often does not appeal to you? It is easy to forget to turn it down every time you leave for work. A better option would be to install a programmable thermostat. These are amazing products due to the fact that you can have the heat set to kick back on before you get home from work or out of bed. You can find these for very affordable prices; usually under $50. Programmable thermostats are definitely worth the money to avoid extra hassle and make life simpler.

After you have your thermostat issues taken care of, it is very important to make sure you schedule routine unit checks on your furnace by your HVAC technician. They can keep your filters cleaned, along with other important inspections to ensure you are getting the lowest rate on your utility bills possible.
