A very difficult aspect of growing up, especially as a young child, is dealing with bullying in your life. Children that are bullied may not tell their parents, which is why parents need to become more aware about their child's everyday life. While you don't want to be overprotective of kids, you do want to keep a watchful eye on them and make sure they aren't being bullied. To cope with bullying in the life of your child, here are some strategies you can use.
Often, when parents find out their kid is being tormented by a bully, they first opt to speak to the bullies parents. This may seem like the responsible thing to do, it is not the wisest. It is a pretty good bet that the home life of a bully was highly influential to their disposition. The upbringing of a bully is not necessarily the reason for their lack of compassion, but it could be a huge factor. Not to mention the fact that most parents will go to battle for their kids; right or wrong. With this conclusion, think twice before considering this an option. If you need to speak to someone, speak to a school authority. They will then contact the parents of the bully. It is true that children are reluctant to report that they have experienced bullying to adults of any type. There are a few reasons for this, from shame to fear to not wanting to look like a tattletale. That's why it's important to instill in your child the idea that they shouldn't hesitate to tell someone if they are bullied. Once children understand that bullies will be afraid of them if they know that they will tell an adult, they will do what is right and tell an adult after such an incident. Kids that trust one or more adults will be more motivated to report that they have been bullied. These incidents will be reported by children that actually have someone that they trust.
You should also know that bullying comes in many forms, not just physical violence. Bullying, in fact, can be more detrimental to a child using verbal abuse such as teasing and making the children feel inadequate or worthless. An example of this would be someone making fun of a child because they were overweight, or because they had a vision problem. Contacting a school official, once you know that your child is suffering from this type of bullying, is essential. Bullying can involve any number of tactics, and you should be alert to the many forms it can take. Bullying can take many forms -physical attacks, teasing and now even text messages or emails. If your kid is feeling sensitive and overreacting to things, it could be they are the recipient of a bullies torment. The most reasonable way to approach a bullying issue is by defusing the situation and standing by your child.
