As the name it suggests that red eyed tree frog spend most of their time in trees and they can be only seen on the ground if they need to breed and spawn. So if you are fond of these little red eyed tree frogs and you want to set up a frog enclosure, you need to make sure you do it right. In case you are doing it for the first time, it becomes even more important to do it correctly to as it will be much easier for you to deal with all the future enclosure related issues. You need to keep in mind to make the enclosure appropriate because only then the frog will be able to stay happier and healthier. You need to do the following steps to make it right.
1. Enclosure – As mentioned, red eyed frog spend most of their time in trees and tall shrubs and plants, keeping this fact in mind you should always get an aquarium which is as tall as possible. Also makes sure that the enclosure has limited openings as it will help to keep up the maximum humidity level up to 80-90%. According to your own preferences, you can either choose moveable or either lift able screen that can be opened from the top. Glass sides, as opposed to screen and/or mesh make it easier not only for the frogs to climb on but also to keep the humidity up.
2. Substrate- It is important to cover them with a ground because it helps in the cleaning process and also it helps with the aesthetics and humidity control. Depending upon the type you are using, you can also prefer to use the plant live flora. Other than this, there are many other methods to cover the floor such as with paper towel, moss and soil. Paper towel is one of the great methods for easy clean up also it is cheap and easy to replace. Moss on the other hand, also holds moister pretty well, easy to distribute along the floor, consumes excrement and grow. As far as soil is concerned, it holds moisture for extended periods of time, looks natural, works well with or without live or dried moss, has a nice earthy aroma.
3. Lighting- : There is no particular type of light that is recommended to use with red eyed tree frogs. However, it is important to give the at least 12 hour photoperiod needed for normal day/night existence. If you have live plants in your enclosure (great idea) then you'll need a UV grow light set at a 12 hour time limit or the plants will decay.
4. Feeding- : These little creatures are fond of eating. Like all the other frogs they are gluttons which mean that they will continue to eat till they develop a weight problem. There is nothing more horrible than watching an obese frog try to nimbly climb or jump. The food of choice is of course crickets. While feeding, make sure that the size of all their live food should be no longer that the width of the frog's head from eye to eye. This measurement is cast aside if feeding a red wiggler worm or wax worms.
