Having a pond in one's back or front yard adds an attractive addition to the landscape. When fitted in with the surrounding plants and flowers it not only gives elegance but also provides many hours of pleasure, especially if there are also fish in a pond. One thing that will help keep that pond clear and beautiful is with the use of a UV light in pond. This light is not only practical but provides a glow that gives an added attraction to the pond. One is able to clearly see the fish swimming around through the clear water. Often, in a pond without the light, this is something that one does not see.

This UV (ultraviolet) light is a sterilizer that is used when there is a problem with algae in a pond. These algae grow because of an excess of organic nutrients and warm weather and can become unsightly and even have a bad odour. This device works on getting rid of these algae.

The size of the device to be selected depends on the size of the pond and the water flow rate. It should be noted at this point that this device will not get rid of or help control filamentous algae. However, it will provide nice, clear water which improves the looks of a pond greatly.

The rate of the water flow is important because, if it is too fast, the rays of the UV will not have time to work. Therefore, if deciding to purchase one of these units it is important to determine that it is the correct size for a pond. Some units will only clear the water to a certain depth, called clarity rating, not to the bottom of a pond. This is not sterilization. This distinction should be determined at the time of purchase.

Most of these lamps have a guarantee to last 14 months. Some will last longer than this but, when the pond starts turning colour again it is time for a new one. Even though the lamp may still be burning it will be obvious that it is not working.

There is a sleeve that protects the lamp from the water. If this becomes built up with deposits it will not allow the rays to hit the water. Therefore, it is important to keep it clean. It can simply be wiped off with a paper towel or, if necessary, wiped with a vinegar soaked cloth. It should be noted that this sleeve is fragile so should be handled with care.

Placement of this light is essential if it is to be effective. It depends on where the intake pump is. An explanation regarding proper placement of the UV can be determined at time of purchase.

It should be understood that the UV sterilizer does not replace biological filtration nor take the place of general water quality, it just makes the water clear. Maintaining a good and healthy pond requires many things and the UV light in pond will help with most algae control.

Author Resource:- Pond UV light is an effective way to control the build up of suspended algae types so it is essential for all garden ponds.
